She had a sixteen-year-old daughter from her first marriage, which had ended in divorce when the daughter, Jenna, was just a few months old. Raising a daughter as a single parent while developing her spiritual awareness was an adventurous though at times difficult job for Mara. They traveled often, living in many different places as Mara sought to find her way. She eventually remarried, and their travels continued as a threesome. They even lived in a small village in Mexico where Mara studied Native spirituality with the local people. Jenna enjoyed the good and simple life that they had in Mexico until her mother returned to the United States and divorced her stepfather. It broke Jenna’s heart to lose the man she considered her father. After that divorce, Mara promised Jenna that she would not marry again until Jenna was grown and on her own because they had been through so much heartache.
Now back in the United States, Jenna was attending high school, and Mara was working hard to establish her own business and a secure home for the two of them. They enjoyed a very close and supportive relationship that had been strengthened through the hardships and struggles they had encountered together. Life was moving forward, and Mara was content to be on her own. She was focused on Jenna and living her truth. Things seemed to be going quite smoothly until Drew appeared out of the past. He was a dear friend who had known Mara and Jenna for years and had faithfully kept in touch, even when they were living in other parts of the world. This time Drew wanted to talk to Mara about the many changes in his life and to let her know that he would like to move their relationship beyond friendship.
After some months of dating, all the signs were right and Drew asked Mara to marry him. Mara was so delighted that things were going so well for everyone that she failed to remember her promise to Jenna and enthusiastically accepted his proposal. When Mara told Jenna her news, Jenna accepted it graciously at first, saying nothing of the promise made so long ago. However, as the marriage plans were being made and they began to look for a house for the three of them, Jenna grew more and more quiet. After a while, she became totally sullen and went to her room whenever Drew came to visit. When Mara or Drew asked her what was wrong, she had no answer. Jenna wanted to and tried to be happy for her mother and Drew, but the tension increased. Jenna needed to protect her heart, which had not yet recovered from the disappointments of the past losses in her life.
Mara became concerned and sat alone to listen for the inner guidance of her truth. She would ask, “What is the truth of this situation? What is the real problem?” After much contemplation the answer finally came to her.
